What are "American Indian Urban Centers?"

Native American and Alaska Native people are at least 1.4% of the population in every area of the United States according to the 2000 US Census. American Indian Urban Centers are nonprofit organizations that first came into being in the 1950's in response to the 'relocation' policies of the federal government toward Native American. "Relocation" policies encouraged Native American people residing on reservations to 'relocate' to urban areas with promises of better economic conditions and more opportunity. Many Native people later recognized that the 'relocation policies' were an effort to increase the assimilation of Indian people into the dominant culture and also played into other federal policies that were trying to terminate the reservations of existing Tribal Nations. While former U.S. policies encouraged migration away from American Indian homelands to urban areas, resourceful Native American people in cities across the US created "Urban Indian Centers" in response to their own needs and to prepare to help other newly arriving tribal members in the urban environment. Urban Indian Centers often serve to this day to assure a continued sense of Indian community. They provide a broad array of services and sustain American Indian culture and community in many cities. Examples of services Indian Centers provide include: social, employment and health related services.
